Unlocking 500TB of wind simulation data to advance energy innovation
How can we effectively and efficiently make half a petabyte, or 61,318 slices, of wind simulation data, captured over seven years, available to the public so they can easily explore it and join NREL in its mission to advance and optimize energy systems?
Interested users need a quick, inexpensive way to interact with the datasets, without sacrificing the flexibility to slice the data as they see fit.
NREL partnered with the HDF Group to make this data available on Kita™. Kita was developed to use Amazon resources to provide convenient, scalable access to huge geospatial datasets like this, cost-effectively. Together, NREL and Kita aggregated this enormous dataset onto one 50TB “file” that was easily available to the public, for free.
Interested users can now use the Kita client libraries to explore this valuable data source, whenever and wherever, unleashing their ability to contribute to advancements in energy systems, anywhere and anytime.
