The latest formal release of HDF5 1.6, version 1.6.7, can be obtained from this page. This release contains bug fixes and changes since the 1.6.6 release.
Please note that we also provide the HDF5 1.8.0 release.
Due to the number of major new features in 1.8.0, we are supporting two branches of HDF5. The 1.6 branch is for those 1.6 users who do not need the new features in 1.8.0 or are not ready to move to a major new release.
Please refer to the What's New in 1.8.0 document to decide whether or not to move to the HDF5 1.8.0 release. New users are strongly encouraged to use HDF5 1.8.0.
External Software
The following libraries are used by HDF5, but are *not* part of HDF5.
Please be aware that the external software below (especially ZLIB) is
provided for convenience reasons ONLY and comes WITHOUT a guarantee.
We encourage users to use the ZLIB library that is installed on
their systems.
External Libraries used by HDF5
| SZIP Compression | Information | Source Code [ 2.1 ] | Pre-Compiled Binaries [ 2.0 ] [ 2.1 (Windows, Mac Intel) ] |
| ZLIB Compression | Information | Source Code [ 1.2 ] | Pre-Compiled Binaries [ 1.2 ] |
NOTE:
- The SZIP configuration changed in version 2.1, but this did not
affect the built SZIP 2.0 binaries.
- The SZIP Encoder is ENABLED in the HDF5 binaries included below.
This version allows a user to create, write, and read HDF5 datasets
with SZIP compression. Please review the
SZIP
licensing information.
- The pre-built HDF5 binaries include the ZLIB library.

* Please note that the compilers listed under each platform in the table are those that the binaries were built with. If your compilers or platform are different than those listed, you may need to build HDF5 from source.
** The Binary Distribution includes the libraries, include files, pre-compiled binary utilities, and release notes. They were built with the ZLIB library and SZIP library with the SZIP Encoder Enabled. Refer to SZIP Compression listed under External Libraries, above, for details on what this means.
